Project Based Learning - Identifying A Problem, Getting to Work to Solve It in 1st Grade

The Caretta 2 Global Project

Our first graders in Mrs. Silicato's class at Bethel Springs are taking part in a very unique project. Mrs. Silicato, along with teachers from all around the globe have worked to plan the Caretta 2 Turtle project. The originator of the project, a teacher in Greece, wanted to raise a greater awareness of endangered sea turtles specifically the Caretta, also known as the Loggerhead Sea Turtle. With this brilliant idea, teachers worked together and collaborated using Google Hangout to plan activities to communicate with one another's classes via wikispaces, to raise awareness of the endangered sea turtles.

Mrs. Silicato's class created a "sealing" on their classroom ceiling to set the mood for their research and learning. They kicked off their turtle study reading a book and creating a Thinglink project for the facts they gathered while reading.
The class also adopted their very own sea turtle.
Check back soon  to see what they do next to raise more awareness of this ongoing problem with sea turtles.
