1st Grade, Design Challenges and Thanksgiving = Learning and Fun All in One @ BSES

Design Thinking & 1st Graders


During American Education Week, Mrs. Sullivan’s First graders, at  BSES and their special guests visited the Collaboration and Innovation Lab.  At the lab the students and special guests participated in a Design Challenge. Each group was assigned a different challenge. Students were given specific materials to build the following challenges. They constructed amazing structures.

Design Challenge #1 - Turkey Hideaway - Using legos, lincoln logs, cardboard, and duck tape, build a hideout for the cut out turkey. Do not leave any part of the turkey to be seen.

Design Challenge #2 - Thanksgiving Table - Using popsicle sticks and dice build a Thanksgiving table to fit all the Thanksgiving trimmings you have been given. Do not let any of the items touch another item and nothing can be hanging over the side of the table. Check out these amazing tables:








Design Challenge #3 -Mayflower Ship -  Using styrofoam, cardboard and duck tape, build a ship that can hold the most pilgrims. (1 Penny = 1 Pilgrim). You will need to test your ship in water to be sure it floats and test it to see how many pilgrims it can carry.

Hands-on Approach to Celebrating Earth Day   What better way to teach 1st graders about the Earth than to have them experience what it means to reduce, reuse and recycle. In one of the elementary schools in which I teach I created stations for hands-on learning to teach important concepts to the students in hopes that by providing concrete examples they would walk away with a stronger knowledge of why we celebrate the Earth and how each of them can care for it. There were four stations set up in the Makerspace. Each student completed each station by the end of the class period. Students used recycled water bottles to build planters. Each student added soil and planted seeds to start the growth of a new plant. This activity not only showed students how they can repurpose materials but gave them something to care for. Kindergartners + The Three Little Pigs = STEAM Project

The Three Little Pigs with some STEAM Mrs. Dana Calderone, a Reading Specialist at Concord Elementary School, taught the letter "P" to her class of kindergartners last week. The students learned about the letter P by learning about pigs. After reading the story of "The Three Little Pigs" students were challenged to build a house the big, bad wolf couldn't blow down. Students brainstormed ideas of what they could build their house out of, created blueprints of the houses they were to build  and got to work building.  After two days, each student created a house and wrote about why they chose the materials they did to hopefully keep the wolf from blowing down his or her house. On the last day, students tested their homes to see if the Big, Bad Wolf could blow their house down. Check it out, all the houses survived the wolf. To end this exciting experience, She used Green Screen for each child to tell his/her story of the " Three Little Pigs"

Collecting for a Cause and Infusing STEM into learning

At GVMS, some of our 6th, 7th and 8th grade classes, took part in Canstruction, Jr. This project not only taught our students about collecting and donating to a local food bank but important lessons of engineering, math, technology and teamwork really got the job done. Students were challenged to build a structure that correlated with the theme "50 Years and Growing". The theme stems from our district's 50th anniversary. On January 29th, students built there structures and our entire administration team was there to vote on the structures. The following week, students had the opportunity to vote for the student choice award at their lunch time, using google forms. This amazing project was led by one of our  Math and Science teacher at GVMS.  Take a minute to check a few of the amazing structures below.
